CALL FOR SUPPORTERS: MOZART & SALIERI by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov - National Tour 2017

Dear Friends of Russian classical music,

It was my great pleasure to produce a professional revival of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's operatic masterpiece MOZART & SALIERI in London in 2016. It began in the 50-seat venue Phoenix Artist Club in April 2016, and within three months we got invited to play at the renowned Arcola Theatre Grimeborn Festival in August 2016 in their 200 seat, main auditorium. The production was a huge success among audiences and critics alike and has been called "one of Grimeborn's most striking rediscoveries...very well worth seeing" (The Spectator). It also is a finalist for the Off West End Award 'Best Opera Production 2016'.

I didn't receive any public funding for this production and had to rely on donors, the support of friends and family, and made a considerable private investment.

Following the success of this year's performances, I want to tour the show to regional venues in the UK in 2017. There is a big interest and I already have bookings secured from various venues, but to make this tour possible, I need to raise another £4,200. Please do take a look at our production below, which includes information about the tour schedule and budget, and see if you can help us to give the show the exposure it deserves by becoming our supporter!

Kind regards,
Pamela Schermann

Pamela Schermann in rehearsals for Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Mozart & Salieri

“Villainy and genius can never be compatible?“

The opera follows the apocryphal legend that Antonio Salieri poisoned his rival and fellow composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart out of jealousy over his talent. Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) used the short story Mozart and Salieri by Alexander Pushkin as libretto, which also inspired Peter Shaffer’s famous stage play and film Amadeus.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s rarely performed two-hander is a character study, it is a close-up of Salieri’s tormented mind. He is portrayed as a generous man who is torn between admiration for his fellow composer and his own jealousy.

In a new English translation and staged by an award-winning team around stage director Pamela Schermann and musical director Andrew Charity, this original and innovative production will captivate its audience, making us witnesses, if not conspirators, of Salieri’s plan to poison Mozart.

"One of Grimeborn's most striking rediscoveries...very well worth seeing!" - The Spectator, August 2016

"Mozart and Salieri is a gem. Peter Shaffer's play is well known as is the overacted film, but few know that these pieces derive from this short opera by Rimsky-Korsakov with a libretto by Pushkin. With such talented progenitors, it is no wonder that the original has a humanity and gentleness that the more theatrical variants don't have" - Hackney Citizen, August 2016
