Current season:

OPERA IN THE CITY FESTIVAL

Time Zone Theatre Ltd and artistic director Pamela Schermann present OPERA IN THE CITY FESTIVAL 2018 from 22nd August - 8th September at Bridewell Theatre, City of London. London’s new summer opera festival is home for the unusual and shows productions which push the boundaries of classical music.

This year’s highlights include the in-house season 'Underworld' with Orpheus and Eurydice by Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714 - 1787) and Faust, Alberta, a new opera by award-winning composer Simone Spagnolo. The mono-opera explores the story of Doctor Faustus and his fatal deal with Mephistopheles from a contemporary angle, starring baritone Benjamin Bevan, whose engagements include Henry Cuffe in Britten’s Gloriana and Der Sprecher in Zauberflöte (Royal Opera House), Lescaut in Boulevard Solitude by Henze (Royal Danish Opera and Welsh National Opera), and work with BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, among many others.

Strong female stories take centre stage in the further festival programme. Ayanfe, A Yoruba Opera by April Atinuke Koyejo is inspired by her own ancestry and the desire to bring the Yoruba culture to the operatic stage. British-American soprano Kathryn Frady presents the UK Premiere of the one-woman opera Amelia Lost by Larry Delinger, a haunting and inspirational story about a homeless woman who believes herself to be aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.

The film screening Opera Shorts embraces the collaboration of opera and film with a selection of shorts from various countries and cultures, presented by Everyday Arias. And Lunchbreak opera brings their fast-paced take on Antonio Salieri's rarely performed Prima la musica to the festival.

Innovative, exciting and affordable opera for everyone performed in English - tickets from £12 - £22 are on sale now!

2017 Season

In 2017, we toured our acclaimed production of MOZART & SALIERI and the Mozart-Medley A NIGHT IN VIENNA in the UK and Denmark, including an invitation to perform for the Austrian Ambassador in Copenhagen. We were grateful for the support we received from Arts Council England, which helped us to bring opera to many venues in the UK, and to reach new audiences for opera.

2015 / 2016 Season

We are looking back at an incredibly exciting season! Our contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's OTHELLO, which transfers the action to the cityscape of modern London, opened at the Rose Playhouse in 2015, before it went on to Waterloo East Theatre, a tour through England, and finally a 2-weeks-run at Theaterlab in New York City in August 2016.

Further highlights include our collaboration with New York-based theatre company Luvas Theatre, which brought their artistic director Jung Han Kim to London this summer, where he created a physical theatre production of William Shakespeare's TITUS ANDRONICUS at the Rose Playhouse in July 2016.

Our revival of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera MOZART & SALIERI was part of the Grimeborn Festival 2016 and played at the Arcola Theatre main stage to critical acclaim.
